Big Toe Is Swollen And Hurts

You wake up in the middle of the night, and your big toe feels as if it's on fire. It's hot, swollen and so tender that even the weight of a blanket on it seems intolerable. These problems could indicate an acute attack of gout — or gouty arthritis — a form of arthritis that's characterized by sudden, severe attacks of pain, redness and tenderness in joints. And they tell you to eat cherries. What gives?

You may well have gout. Anyone who has had gout will remember it. Gout is a very painful condition that more often than not results in your big toe and perhaps your entire foot swelling many times its normal size. Your foot will be amazingly painful. Most likely you will not be able to stand and may well be reduced to crawling around on all fours in order to get around.

Gout is a painful condition that occurs when the bodily waste product uric acid is deposited in needle-like crystals in your joints and / or soft tissues. Indeed gout is a form of arthritis. It is amazing that these tiny crystals of uric acid can cause you so much trouble. In the joints of your body these tiny uric acid crystals cause this redness and swelling. You can and will suffer greatly with this intermittent swelling, redness, heat, great pain and stiffness of joints. The pain typically lasts five to 10 days and then stops. The discomfort subsides gradually over one to two weeks, leaving your joint s apparently normal and pain-free.

Gout has been known all the way back to the Roman times. Gout has a colorful history and has been called “A Rich Man’s Disease”. Various foods, behaviors and even sex have been blamed as the culprits causing gout.

Gout may well run in your family. There are predispositions of genetic factors. Mainly though the one factor that people can change to reduce their chances of getting gout relating to diet, weight and alcohol intake.

Being overweight increase the risks of developing gout. The fatter and heavier you are – the more tissue you have that breaks down that uric acid in your body. Lose weight. Next reduce your alcohol consumption. Drinking too much alcohol makes it harder and harder for your body to remove that uric acid from your body easily. Lastly the one major change that people can take to reduce their chances of getting gout is to change and modify their diet. Eating the wrong foods that are rich in purines can push your chances of getting gout over the edge so to speak. The amazing part is that the uric acid crystals may deposit in your joints causing gout a some later. Not in the immediate several days following your pleasure.

You may think that you got away with eating that shrimp or having a few dark beers for the several days. Then a week, several weeks or even a month later, bam, your foot and big toe swell up. You well can guess what the tie in that resulted in your latest discomfort of gout.

What is a recommended diet to reduce your chances of gout? Lose weight. Avoid red meats and foods high in purines. These include Sweetbreads, shrimp, anchovies, sardines, beef kidneys and brains, Meat extracts (e.g. Oxo, Bovril), herring, mackerel, scallops, game meat, gravy, dark beer and alcohol of any type, Moderate intake of Vegetables such as asparagus, cauliflower, spinach, mushrooms and green peas. Reduce your intake of Lentils, dried peas and beans. Beef, pork, poultry, fish and seafood should all be eaten in moderation. Lastly reduce your intake of Oatmeal, wheat bran and wheat germ.

You may well be given by your doctor pills to take on a regular ongoing basis to reduce your uric acid levels. Do not take them when you are having a gout attack thinking that these gout pills will help you.

Taking thi 00004000 s medication that prevents gout during a gout attack will only increase the actual uric acid in your blood making your gout much worse. In addition your doctor may give you different medication to take during the gout attack. This medication is very different than that given to prevent gout. Lastly do not take aspirin during a gout attack. You may think that since gout is related to arthritis that aspirin will help you.

Taking aspirin during a gout attack will only make your gout worse. However if your doctor has prescribed aspirin for another medical condition do not stop taking that aspirin. It is best always to contact your doctor for specific instructions.

Lastly you may have been told to drink cherry juice or eat blueberries. To help your gout.

Consuming dark berries can well help your uric acid levels and gout. It has been known for many years that competitive bicyclists would consume dark berries and berry juices before competitive bicycle races.

The dark pigment giving berries their darker colors is derived from a chemical called “Anthracines”.

Anthracines can be found to have a very very potent antinflammatory effect. The anti-inflammatory effect of anthracine compounds in dark berries can well help to reduce the symptoms of your gout and get you along the way.

Research is underway to compare the benefits of different types of berries or berry juices that you can consume. Anthracines are components of the dark pigments that give the darker berries their colors.

For the moment is appears that cherries (most notably sour cherries), and blueberries are loaded with the gout helping anthocyanins.

And it's a little bit swollen. It just really hurts to touch it, and I accidentally just walking into a table and now it's throbbing.
It's also warmer than my other toes. And it hurts to walk on it.
It's so random, I can't think what I've done to it.

    • ANSWER:
If it starts feeling like it has been crushed every 2-3 seconds. in couple hours/1-2 days. Then you have an ingrown toenail.

If you trim your toenails too short, particularly on the sides of your big toes, you may set the stage for an ingrown toenail. Like many people, when you trim your toenails, you may taper the corners so that the nail curves with the shape of your toe. But this technique may encourage your toenail to grow into the skin of your toe. The sides of the nail curl down and dig into your skin. An ingrown toenail may also happen if you wear shoes that are too tight or too short.

When you first have an ingrown toenail, it may be hard, swollen and tender. Later, it may get red and infected, and feel very sore. Ingrown toenails are a common, painful condition—particularly among teenagers. Any of your toenails can become ingrown, but the problem more often affects the big toe. An ingrown nail occurs when the skin on one or both sides of a nail grows over the edges of the nail, or when the nail itself grows into the skin. Redness, pain and swelling at the corner of the nail may result and infection may soon follow. Sometimes a small amount of pus can be seen draining from the area.

Ingrown nails may develop for many reasons. Some cases are congenital—the nail is just too large for the toe. Trauma, such as stubbing the toe or having the toe stepped on, may also cause an ingrown nail. However, the most common cause is tight shoe wear or improper grooming and trimming of the nail.

  7. QUESTION:
HELP me, please? Big toe is swollen and hurting...?
okay, so i am a gymnast. i usually have good balance, but yesterday i was wearing a 20 lb pair of weights on my ankles, and doing leaps. Then, i tripped over my right big toe! it is swollen, but not huge. when i broke my elbow, it didn't swell hardly at all, and i was out for 6 months! anyway, i am scared i did something to it. i don't have a full range of motion in it, and my big toe is slightly blue. i have iced it for a total of like, 5 hours, in 2 days! the swelling went down over night more or less, so my parents don't want to take me to the doctor. it hurts to flex my toe, and a little to point it. it also hurts to walk. what should i do? help!
i mean 10 lb pair of wirght. that is 5 lbs per ankle

  8. QUESTION:
My right big toe is swollen but not hugely swollen. There are no sore sports and no redness but it hurts a lot?
My toe has been hurting a lot since Last thursday and I went to the doctor about it on friday. At first they said it was a muscle strain and should start to get better over the weekend. It only got worse. Went back to doctor on monday and said it might be gout and did a blood test to see and the test came back negative for gout and then x-rays were taken to make sure no break was present and there was none. Now they are saying that it is an infection but I am not sure how I could have got an infection in only my big toe. Everytime I move it or it gets touched it hurts like you would not believe. I cant even walk on it because it hurts so bad. I am on anitbiotics but so far not helping. Any ideas anyone?
my blood tests come back negative for gout my uric levels were fine. My foot is not swelled up like I have seen in other gout paitents on the internet. My foot is only slightly swollen. Any other ideas?
its defiantly not an ingrown toenail. The toe part is fine now pain whatsoever there. Most of the pain is there by the joint at the base of the toe. Not the one closest to the toenail but the next joint down.
    Any other ideas?

  11. QUESTION:
why is my big toe swollen? for no reason?
my big toe is red and swollen on the right side of my toe, it is very very painful. i don't remember hurting it in anyway, it has been like this for days now,i see a white spot on the red area of it, what is this? could it be an infection? i can not walk straight anymore, but i'm limping. it's so bad that the whole area from the right knee to the toes hurt bad, just because of that one toe...what is it? please help

    • ANSWER:
Gout owuld be my first choice as this is the joint that it most frequently affects. Usually it will cause redness, swelling and a great deal of pain. You doctor can run some simple blood test to determine if it is gout and there are medications to treat this condition as well as some diet modifications. Becasue you have the white spot, which is not normally seen with gout, I would question whther or not you have an infection. Most infections of the skin are cuased by staphylococcus and some infections of the skin can develop under the outer layer of skin and form a type of abcess. If this is the case then you need some antibiotics to treat it. Either way I would recommend a trip to the doctor to get the correct diagnosis and medications. Don't wait too long because if it is infection it could get into your blood and cause sepsis.

  12. QUESTION:
What should I do about a swollen toe?
My left big toe hurts like so so bad. It is purple and it always bleeds and yellow liquid comes out when I walk. I soak it every morning and every night. I think I need the Hospital because it hurts and is extremly swollen

    • ANSWER:
Is it under the nail bed or just on the edge of the nail bed? This could be an ingrown toenail and sounds infected. Make a Doctors appointment so they can put you on antibiotics. If the antibiotics don't get rid of the pain you'll have to be referred to the hospital. In the meantime, soak your foot in salt water.
      Hope I helped?

My dad had gout, I think, so perhaps I inherited a tendency. My big toe is not swollen, red, hot or swollen. It has just been painful for months. It comes and goes. I'm 52 and female.

My toe hurts most when I bend it up or down.

Does anyone know what kind of doctor treats this problem, a podiatrist perhaps?

I just want to know what I have. I don't want to go to a doctor simply to be told to take Aleve.

    • ANSWER:
Well if it is gout then take organic apple cider vinegar, 2 tablespoons mixed in a cup of cranberry juice or any liquid. If it really is gout then this will help stop the pain and prevent gout flareups. My father is 64 yrs old & suffered for about 2 years from gout and my in my internet research I found many people use organic ACV and it really helps. The doc gave him meds that was too strong for him, he told me when he peed it wouldn't come out straight. Get the "Braggs" brand buy it at any health food store like "Henry's" for under about . BTW my father started drinking ACV 2 years ago and still hasn't had any flareups :) I used to get the flu every year and catch every cold then I too take organic ACV once a week and haven't been sick since. Literally an apple a day keeps the doctor away; in this case apple cider vinegar :)

Try to get in to see your doctor sooner. Did your doctor advise you to stay off your foot and keep it elevated? Elevating it may help. Have you tried sleeping with it on a pillow? I did that when I broke my ankle and it helped with the throbbing. Sometimes injuries other than breaks actually hurt worse than a break and toe injuries hurt like @#$(@#%&!

I hope you feel better fast!

Can't walk: toe next to big toe hurts when i walk... PLEASE HELP?
I'm not sure how long i have had this for, maybe 3 weeks or a month, but it's gotten dramatically worse since yesterday. I'm a track runner, and after every practice since this has started I have had a little pain in my toe that is next to the big toe. It hurts on like the knuckle that connects your toe to your foot. and after a while when i was done with my workout, it would go away. But its been getting worse. and yesterday after my 800 it was really hurting me but after a cool down it kinda went away. after my 400 though, it hurt so bad i had to limp. and ive been limping ever since. it didn't go away. i woke up today, saturday, and my toe is swollen and i cant walk without a huge pain. it's hard to think it could be broken, since its been hurting for a while and i've been running on it. if i like move my toe up as high as i can it hurts on that knuckle, when i walk it kills, and it hurts if i press on the knuckle too. my coach said my tendons under my foot might be tight and its hurting the top of my toe but idk. i need someones advice because I'm going to state this year and I can't even walk now.

    PLEASE HELP ME. Thanks.

  23. QUESTION:
what can be done for a ingrown toenail on big toe that is swollen and hurting terribly bad?

    • ANSWER:
I have had that before, and you should probably see a pediatrist. They will take out the part of the nail that is digging into your skin and causing the infection, the procedure takes about 5 minutes, you are totally awake, but they give you local anesthesia. It isnt a painless experience, but in the longrun the pain doesnt even compare to what you feel now. good luck!

I have tried squeezing it but it's just too painful :( Should I stab it with something? or would that give me a worse infection? I'm scared of hospitals and don't like the idea of that! If I stab it with a sterile needle I could drain it? :/ Sorry for totally grossing you out! Thanks.
I know it's horible, I dont know how it happened. :/

If it is an ingrown toenail, what will happen if I don't do anything to help it? Like see the Dr.

It sounds like an ingrown toenail that's infected. Stop picking at it with tweezers! It will get worse, trust me. Go to your doctor, or if you can, a podiatrist (foot specialist). They numb the area and remove the ingrown nail and it's a pretty easy and painless procedure.

It's actually like numb right now. PLEASE HELP!
    what is gout???
    And what's an ingrown nail?

    • ANSWER:
The edge of your nail is very thin and sharp and can press into the skin of the toe causing pain, when it breaks the skin it is referred to as ingrown. By keeping the nail length even with the end of the toe, and using a straight across cut you can limit this happening. For now, trim the nail as described. Get hold of a metal nail file (because they are very thin) and gently run under the nail from center to edge and carefully lift the edge up as you work out. This will be a bit painful for you right now. When you get to the end (you will have only been using the tip) run the rough body of the file up under the nail and out. There will have been some filings and scaly buildup removed. Do this one or two more times. Just for now to relieve the pressure, take a nail clipper and turn it vertical to the nail and place it centered on the nail and make a small clip (not to the quick). This will relieve the pressure at the sides of the nail for now. Now soak your feet (or yourself) in hot soapy water. Pour a little alcohol or witch hazel on the toe. Keep nail clipped to end of toe, file straight and file under edge 1x per month.

  31. QUESTION:
Why is my big toe red, a little swollen, hot, painful?
I've had a fungi toe for years and it was never a problem except maybe it is ugly.
Since last night I started having pain in it and at first the area by the nailbed hurt (so its not an ingrown nail) but now the whole nail hurts. My toe is red and very warm to the touch. Its hard to move now.
I dont have a fever or swollen ankles or anything like that.
    What could it be?

    • ANSWER:
Without being able to actually look at it and examine it first hand, it sounds as though you have an infected toe. The redness, swelling, pain and heat would indicate infection most likely. It may be unrelated to the toenail fungus that you suffer from, or it may be related. The only way to determine that is to have it checked out by a doctor, preferably a specialist (Podiatrist).

The other thing it could be is an injury. However, I am guessing that if you stubbed it on something, or it got stepped on or injured in any way in the recent past, that you would have mentioned it. If you did not mention it and actually did sustain an injury or some trauma to that toe, then it is possible that this is the reason for the swelling, redness, pain and heat.

If you can take an NSAID (non steroidal anti inflammatory drug) like Motrin (Ibuprofen) or Aleve (Naproxen Sodium) then take some. I would also recommend applying ice to the toe for 15 minutes and then taking the ice off for the rest of the hour and the applying it again for 15 minutes and repeating this process until you have to go to work, school or to bed. The ice will help reduce the inflammation as will the NSAID. It is possible that if you do this for a few days it will resolve itself, but if it gets worse or does not get better within a few days of the NSAID and Ice treatment, then get to the doc.

  32. QUESTION:
toe hurts where foot and big toe meet?
I dont recall stubbing it or anything but this morning when i woke up the part where my foot and my big toe connects hurts. It doest hurt when i press on it just when i move the toe upwards and when i lift my foot up. Its not swollen from what i can see what could this be. also last night i went to a dance . i dance alot.

    • ANSWER:
dancing.... make sure its not athlete's foot.

Make sure the shoes you dance in do not force your feet into unexpected positions.

Otherwise... give it some ice... 48 hours... if its doing better great... if at any point it gets worse, see a doctor.

  33. QUESTION:
hot, red, swollen 2nd biggest toe... teenage girl?
My second biggest toe hurts and is swollen, red, and hot. It does this sometimes, but I usually ignore it. I used to have ingrown toenail problems... could this pain be from that? It doesn't seem to get worse if I ignore it. It sounds like gout or bacterial arthritis I think, but I don't know what to do! I don't like doctors, so that is NOT an option. Thank you. :)

    • ANSWER:
It certainly could be from an ingrown toenail. Look at it closely. Gout is best diagnosed with a simple blood test for uric acid levels. It usually effects the big toe. I have provided you with links below to WebMD. First is on gout, second on ingrown toenails, and then their symptom checker. You input as much info as you can and it gives you the possible causes. Some general first aid things to try. If you believe it might be gout or arthritis (kind of a reach for a teenager) then try some Ibuprofen (take with some food or milk to minimize stomach upset). It is an over the counter (OTC) anti-inflammatory and pain reliever. Try soaking the foot in some hot water with some epsom salts if there are any on hand. If the pain does not get any worse and you are dead set against doctors then treat the symptoms as instructed above when it flares up. The next time you go to the doctor mention the problem. Most doctors order periodic blood tests for patients. It does not require any additional needles to run one more test. Good luck and hope the info helps you.

my big toe hurts after tripping over a step 3 weeks ago?
3 Weeks ago i tripped over a door step when walking quickly in my living room from the patio. It really hurt, made me cry and it immediately got swollen. the next day the swelling looked better and it didn't hurt as much so I didn't get it checked out..and I haven't had time since. However, the big toe is still really hurting. i can walk ok, BUT certain shoes are hurting it and it hurts a lot when bending it or straightening it. in particular it hurts on the bone that slightly pertrudes on the inside of the foot by the big toe( i don't know the name). To look at, the inside of the foot by that bone, is slightly swollen still...
Is it possible I have broken it anddon'tt realise? I fractured my arm once anddidn'tt know for 2 days although i dont know if id be walking...i dont have time to go to the docs unless there is a real reason to so your advice would be much appreciated..

  38. QUESTION:
I fell and really hurt my big toe, I can bend it but it's swollen and extremely painful, any ideas?
I can bend it but do not because of the crazy amount of pain it causes, so I know that it's not broken, I'm limping around because any pressure on it nearly makes me cry. It constantly hurts and throbs, it's been a day.

Does anyone know what I did to it?

Or what I can do about it? I doubt a doctor will be able to do anything,

  39. QUESTION:
I need help with my swollen toe?
I was trying to do the reject (jerk). I was wearing socks and I landed the wrong way and I fell on my right foot and my toes were bent so my entire weight was put right in my toes and I swear I heard all of them crack. Only my big toe is swollen, it hurts when i move it. How do I stop the swelling or relieve the pain. I don't want to miss school. ( so not dancing anymore.)

    • ANSWER:
Haha ice on and off for 20 minutes and take an anti-inflammatory like advil or ibuprofen. if the swelling doesn't go down after a couple days it could be a break or fracture, but on a toe there is not much you can do but stay religious with the ice.. it will heal fine.. And get back on that horse. Keep jerkin

  40. QUESTION:
Bruised swollen big toe after an ironing board fell on it...?
Yes.. last night there was a small ironing board hanging on the door and when I opened it, it fell directly onto the joint of my big toe (I wasn't wearing any shoes) and hurt(s) a LOT. I elevated and iced it for twenty minutes right after. Today I'm doing the same. The toe is swollen and bruised at the joint. It hurts the most when I (accidentally) bend the toe.

Is this something I can wait a while to see the doctor if it doesn't get better, or should I go see her promptly?

    Thanks.
Also, for some reason it hurts really badly when I ice it (and I have a good amount of cloth between my skin and the ice pack). Sort of like burning/pin pricking.

    • ANSWER:
Swelling, discoloration and burning is a big sign that it may be fractured/broken! Check out this site for more symptoms http://orthoinfo.aaos.org/topic.cfm?topic=A00165

If it does not go down for a day or two...you should go see a doctor!!

      Good luck!

    can someone please help!

    • ANSWER:
Best you seek professional medical help. Avoid as much online help as none of us are trained professionals and are not there to evaluate your true condition.

In the mean time avoid excessive movement and ice the area to reduce inflammation.

  43. QUESTION:
Big toe swollen? What is wrong with it?
I have noticed on the tip of my big toe, alittle under the nail is a hard bump it hurts when i touch it roughly or bang it on something. its not red but it feels really odd. i noticed it about a month ago but i thought it was just a bump and it would be fine but its still there wut is wrong with it?

    • ANSWER:
Probably the start of an ingrown toenail. I gave myself endless problems by cutting the nails too short on my big toe. Don't cut those nails for a while, and hope it grows out, but keep an eye on it. I kept trying to cut the nail out from under the skin, which makes it worse- and eventually I had to have the nail removed, after a lot of pain and bleeding it myself.

  44. QUESTION:
Swollen big toe whats wrong with it?
i had an ingrown nail that keeped bugging me so i took it out with a nail clipper but now a month later my big toe is swollen and looks purple and when i walk it hurts me and bleeds. What can i do to fix this? can any 1 tell me if my toe is infected or if it might go away? or what should i do? thanx

    • ANSWER:
It certainly sounds like an infection. Now first of all i would suggest you buy a good anti septic cream from your pharmacy and apply liberally all around the edge of the nail then bandage and tape with sticky plaster, do this morning and night for about 3 or 4 days if no improvement then sorry its the doctors for you.
      good luck.
OBTW when you shower don't use your towel on the infected toe use some clean lint or gauze keep it as sterile as you can.

  46. QUESTION:
My Big Toe hurts... What do you think is wrong with it?
My big toe on my right foot has a red mark and looks swollen on the right side of it, beside the nail. I don't think it is an ingrown nail, as I can feel the end of the nail at the top, and also it would be difficult to bump it as it isn't on the outside of the foot. It hurts when I touch it, and occasionally hurts at other times as well. It also has been like this for the past week or so.

I wear trainers most of the time, but whenever I get the chance to I take of my shoes. I also often wear toe socks, but then again I prefer to take those off when I'm at home.
    Any suggestions? Thanks. :)

    • ANSWER:
It could be any of numerous things from ingrowing nail to a corn. You need to see a chiropodist or, as they now like to be called, a podiatrist.

  47. QUESTION:
My big toe hurts at random times... why?
During the past couple months, the base of my big toe on my right foot sometimes hurts for no reason! I could just be sitting down and it'll start hurting and a few minutes later, the pain will go away but then it'll return again hours or days later. My toe looks fine. There's no bruising or swelling of it, it just randomly hurts. Does anyone know what could be wrong with it?

    • ANSWER:
The base of the big toe corresponds with the neck, in reflexology. When having a treatment my reflexologist will twirl the big toe around and call it "ringing the neck". What she is really trying to do is relieve the tension in the nerves that run into the feet from the neck. When you are ignoring or not noticing your bodies first signals at the source, in this case possibly your neck, it sends the pain on down the line. So perhaps a trip to a massage therapist is in order.

Especially since you have no other symptoms.Gout is extremely painful and your toe would be swollen and red.You would be unable to walk without pain.
But since you say this happens when you are sitting I suspect the neck. Most of us are careless with our posture while sitting. Do a search on reflexology and see for yourself how every nerve ending runs to our hands and feet.
You may need an alignment from a chiropractor as well. They can do a very gentle adjustment without jerking your neck at all.

  48. QUESTION:
My big toe has swelled to the size of a sausage, and hurts like mad! Please help!?
I haven't hurt myself or anything..I just woke up yesterday and it was all puffy and swollen. Its not red, but it hurts like you wouldn't believe. I can't even walk.

    What could it be??
its not an ingrown toenail. my nail doesn't feel anything...its just that section between the foot and the nail that is throbbing.

    • ANSWER:
Maybe an infection of some sort?? Or an ingrowing toe nail maybe?? I would see a doctor to be on the safe side!

  49. QUESTION:
My big toe is hard, swollen, and red-could it be broken?
I can't really put weight on that side of my foot and the toe itself can't bend. If I try, it hurts. I can't move the whole toe up and down a lot, only a little bit. A boy stepped on it really hard. It didn't hurt that much at first, but it became swollen, red, hard, and throbbing. I can't really walk, I can only limp.

Could it be broken? What should I do? I put ice on it for about 25 min 3 hours ago and sprayed Stopain.

Big toe hurts, white stuff coming out?
About 2 days ago my big toe started hurting, I ignored the pain and today I was touching it and white stuff came out from right next to my nail. I searched it up online and the only explanation I found was that it's an ingrown nail... I doesn't look "ingrown" to me (nail doesn't curve in) I trim my nails properly, don't wear tight fitting shoes, and haven't done any activities lately that require running/kicking. It hurts when I touch it or walk on it and it's slightly swollen on the side. Please help! :/
And also, please give any possible treatments..(preferably home remedies) ?

    • ANSWER:
Its ingrown and the white stuff in an infection.
