Frequently Asked Questions

Woke up with a swollen, red, painful, right eyelid?
Hi, im a 16 year old guy and this morning i woke up and my eye hurt then looked in the mirror to see that my right eyelid was swollen and red. Does anybody know what it could have been?

    • ANSWER:
You probably have a stye on the inside of your eyelid. It kind of looks like a pimple. You can buy something over the counter for it, a cream called Stye, but honestly just put a warm compress on your eye for a couple of days.

Swollen and red upper eyelid, very painful.?
My right eyelid is swollen in a line with my eye lashes, it is very red an very painful, does anybody know what this could be?
I woke up this morning and my eye was stuck shut with puss I started taking penicillin last night is there anything I can put on it to stop the infection?

    • ANSWER:
It could be allergic conjunctivitis or acquired angioedema, get a Dr to check it out particularly where vision is concerned.

My dog has red, painful, maybe swollen third eyelids. It's not cherry eye. What is it?
Started last night with his left eye. The third eyelid appeared red and swollen as though something was in his eye. He did not appear to be in any pain and there was no discharge.

This morning, however, his left third eyelid is very red, maybe slightly swollen, and there was a white discharge from the corner of his eye. His right third eyelid is now also red and appears slightly swollen. He consistently rubs at his eyes with his paws, and will not open his eyes very far, if at all.

His third eyelids are not retracting very far either, especially the one on his left eye; it covers half of his eye.

I do know one thing though, and it is that this is probably NOT cherry eye. There is no swollen or protruding gland visible.

I have not noticed any other possible symptoms excepting that he appears more tired/less energetic than usual.

To recap: both third eyelids appear red and slightly swollen, the third eyelids are not retracting from his eyes well, there is a white discharge from one of his eyes, it appears painful to him, he appears tired.

Are there any other possible symptoms I should look for? I am taking him to the vet today and I would like to converse with the vet about what possible diseases/infections this could be. It's a small town vet, so I am assuming they don't have as much knowledge/experience as a larger city's vet.

Also, are there any sites on the internet with pictures of dogs with illnesses of the eyes, etc, so that I may compare different symptoms?

Thanks a lot for any helpful input.
Dogs have what's called a "third eyelid." It's an eyelid that closes around the eye when they sleep. If you peel back a dogs eyelid when it's trying to sleep (not recommended) you should be able to see it. It is normally a light pink color.
ALL dogs have a third eyelid. There is the upper eyelid and lower eyelid where the eyelashes are located, and an additional, "third" eyelid, that moves up from beneath the lower eyelid to cover the eye when the dog sleeps.

The third eyelid is responsible for approximately 30% of the eye's tears.
A certain gland within the third eyelid can sometimes swell and protrude from the eye resulting in what is commonly referred to as "cherry eye."

ALL dogs have a third eyelid.

    • ANSWER:
Firstly ....UnionJac & K... there is a third eye lid... which is called a haw

It is assumed that the connective tissue weakens, thus allowing the gland to prolapse, and is exposed to the dry air and irritants, it can become infected and/or begin to swell. The gland often becomes irritated, red, and swollen. There is sometimes a mucous discharge and if the animals rub or scratch at it, they can traumatize the gland further or possibly create an ulcer on the surface of the eye.

The vet depending on the severity would opt for surgically repositioning the gland as antibiotics and steroids aren't very effective and the possibility of reoccurring infections are highly possible.

Good luck with your appointment and hope she is feeling better very soon.

In my breed of choice, the Boxer, the haw is dark almost black, They can come lighter, some being white which is undesirerable for the conformation ring as it can take away from the appearance and expression

One of my eyelids is swollen, red, and painful... What is it?
One of my eyelids is swollen, red, and painful. The other one is fine. It has felt this way for three days now, getting worse each day. The only thing I can think of is, about a week ago, I put on some liquid eyeliner and mascara and some of it got into my eye, but I thought I rinsed it out. I've flushed my eye out with water several time and it hasn't gotten better. What should I do?

Lump inside my upper eyelid.Extremely painful every time I blink. It's red and very swollen. What's Wrong!!?
Since Wednesday the outside of my left upper eyelid has been red and swollen.
    It is getting worse everyday.
On the inside there is like.A lump.It begins at my eyelashes and is getting bigger.
When I touch it.It's super painful.But.When I blink my eye. It's like.An Extreme Pain every time.
I searched around to figure out what's wrong.But.I'm not too sure.
Have any thoughts of what could be wrong?
Or.What I can do to make it go away?

    I can't deal with pain.And.This is horrible.Haha.
I thought of it being a sty. But. Sty's are on the outside of the eyelid. This is underneath the skin. Could it possibly still be a sty though?

    • ANSWER:
sounds like a sty they have homeopathic sty eye drops at wal-mart or walgreens. i have had them several times, if its not that it could be an infected eyelash if you can see an eyelash in the middle of it pull it out with some tweezers yes it will hurt but it will make it heal faster you might also put some neosporin on the top part of your eye just don't get it in your eye, if it doesn't get better in a few days go see a doc but try those drops or even boric acid (pink eye drops) ~

    Painful Swollen Eyelid?
My right top eyelid just randomly swelled up last night and has been gradually swelling more since. I haven't hurt my eye and I don't believe I've gotten anything in it. It mainly hurts on the corner of the eyelid, it's painful to blink, and the rest of the eyelid feels sore when touched. I have no redness or itching in my eye though the insides of both my upper and lower eyelids are a dark red. There's no vision loss as far as I can tell, just the awkwardness of part of my eye being covered by the puffy eyelid. I've tried putting an ice pack on it, I've tried putting a hot rag on it, I've tried taking allergy meds in case it was some reaction, none of it helped in any way. Is there anything else I can do to at least relieve the pain? Also, what might I suspect from the doctor when I go?

    • ANSWER:
It may be a stye or a clogged gland, or it may be a more general infection. it is probably not allergies in ONE eye... this is the least alarming site with a pretty clear, all on one page, explaination:

THIS one has a nice table at the bottom, of symptoms that may help you figure out if it is a big deal:

THIS one has a detailed description of the risks and treatments for each eyelid ailment:

The treatments for most of the causes of eyelid swelling and pain are either compresses, hot for clogs and infections, cold for irritations and lalergies, or antibiotics.

I have been having puffy, red, painful eyelids that feel worse in the evenings. Could this be due to stress?
I had the same problem last winter and got allergy tested. I am allergic to dust mites, mold, and dogs (and I have two). I thought the eyelid swelling and pain was allergy-related, but now I have the symptoms again recurring over a year later (the symptoms came on suddenly last night). Now I think it might be stress. Could stress be stress causing this problem? Or is it from being cooped up in a closed house all winter?

    Eyelid swollen and painful?
It's not a sty...and Im not allergic to anything. So what else could be making my eye red and swollen. I noticed the other day that my eye was a little red, and it hurt when I was putting on mascara. Now it's very noticeable that threes a little bump there that's red, so basically it looks like someone hit me except its not black and blue. What could be causing this?
I would rather it be pink eye atleast then I would know what to do. Sadly it is not...

    • ANSWER:

What could be the cause of my swollen painful lower eyelid?
Last night I noticed the inside corner of my right lower eyelid was tender. This morning I awoke to the same thing. I looked in the mirror and saw that the lid is swollen and a little red. There isn't a "head", a scab or any puss; which makes me think it may not be a sty. I used to get these a few times a year but this is the first one in a year and a half. After a few days they usually go away. I'm just curious as to what exactly it could be and what is causing it. Thanks for your input and experiences. :)

    • ANSWER:
I woke up with a swollen lower eyelid the other day after a piece of sawdust got in my eye the day before. If nothing got stuck in your eye, you probably have some sort of allergy (maybe to a cleaning product or something?) and an allergy product like Claritin might help clear it up. For now, I would try using a warm compress - warm water on a towel - to take the swelling away. That's what worked for me anyways.

My eyelid is swollen and painful. Should I apply hot or cold?
2 days ago I woke up and my upper left eyelid hurt when I blinked. Yesterday when I got up it was really big and swollen, and a little red. I don't think it's a stye because I don't see a bump, and it doesn't itch and it's not very red. It's still very swollen and it's still painful, especially when I blink. I know that you are supposed to apply warm/hot compresses with styes, and put ice on bruises and swollen areas, but because I am unsure of what it is, I don't know which to do, or to just leave it alone. Please help me! :(

Also, I'm only 13 and very stubborn. I know you're not supposed to touch it, but I do whenever I look in the mirror :/
    I don't have any allergies so I don't think it's that...,.
Actually, the swelling went down a little and there is a bump, turns out it's actually a stye or a chalzion, so I should apply warm. BUt thanks for your answers! All 2 of 'em! ;)

    • ANSWER:
You should apply cold to swelling. A bag of ice wrapped in a hand towel or paper towel should help. If you can determine whether or not its allergies and it doesn't go away within a week, maybe you should at least talk to a doctor. Good luck.

Cut, red, and swollen eye? Please read on...?
The wind blew open my car door yesterday, and the corner hit the top of my closed eyelid. It bled some, but not excessively. Today, I woke up with a swollen and red eyelid. It's painful when touched or while blinking, especially at the corner of the eye. Vision is fine. Should I go to the doctor for this, or should I be okay? Thanks for all your advice!

    • ANSWER:
Your eyes have very sensitive skin around them, particularly the eyelid where the skin is thinner. If there is a cut, keep it clean and take anti inflammatories to help with the swelling and pain. If its not going away in a few days or vision blurs/you start getting headaches then see your doctor asap.

I have a swollen eyelid and I need help to get rid of it.?
A few days ago my eye had swollen up and become painful when I blinked. I went to the doctors and they said it was a cyst under the upper eyelid, so they gave me eye ointment to put on the bottom of my eye so that it can go away. But I need it to go away quickly because I have a prom the next day. Can anyone help me? How can I get rid of the swollen red sore on my eye?

    • ANSWER:
It may be a stye which is an infection of the eyelash follicle. It is a tall order to make it vanish by tomorrow but you can get magnesium sulphate paste from the pharmacist and put some on the areas which will draw out the infection. It is not too bad to have near the eye but don't actually get it in your eye. You might ask the pharmacist to suggest something else also

    Why is my eyelid swollen?
2 days ago, I was at a fair in my town and my eye felt a little irritated and itchy (similar to allergies, which I don't have that bad) but I thought nothing of it. Before going to bed my eye started to hurt, especially on the upper eyelid on the side closest to the nose. When I woke up the next day my eyelid just hurt and felt irritated, especially when I blinked or closed my eyes really tight. It was a little itchy, but I tried not to mess with it. When I woke up today a little less than half of my eyelid closest to my nose (its my right eye) was swollen, red, and more painful than the day before. It was noticed by all of my family without me even telling them. I don't know if it got worse, but it is still swollen, red, puffy, and my right eye is significantly differently shaped than my left eye.

I've had a sty(e) once before, and I remember it being like a little bump under my eyelash, but there is no bump present. The pain is mainly when I blink, close my eyes shut, or touch that part of my eyelid/crease.

What could this be? I'm a little stumped, and all I keep coming upon the internet is a sty(e) or pink eye. I thought pink eye was REALLY itchy though? I'm pretty sure the problem isn't my actual eyeball too. Either way, has anyone out there experienced the same issues? What was it? Should I go to the doctor? And of course, how long should this embarrassing problem last? I'm in high school and this isn't really the type of thing I want to show off during my summer...

Either way, thank you for your time and help!

***I'm 99% sure this isn't from an allergic reaction of my makeup, I've been using the same makeup for a couple years without a problem and didn't change it recently. The only thing I did differently is go to a carnival where I was touching a lot of germs, and sleeping at others houses for 2 nights.

Help me please!! I have very red, VERY swollen eyelids that keep coming back!!! =(?
I was on Accutane for 5 months, I experienced almost all of the symptoms: severe depression, painful headaches, insomnia, mood swings, back pain, rashes, severe chapped lips ( I had a hard time eating and brushing my teeth, and in the morning I would wake up with dry pools of blood on them), a huge change in vision night and day, I bruised so easily, and I was nauseated constanty. My derm. took me off of it about two weeks ago, but near the last month to now I have been getting swollen, red, itchy, burning, watery eyes. They get so bad that I can't even open them from the swelling. At first I thought it was pink eye, as it switced eyes overnight..but now I have it for the 5th time in under 2 months. The eye itself is not red, but my upper eyelid is massive, it's bright red, and swollen to the point where, like I said, I can't see. I've gone to the doctor and he prescribed me eye drops. They've done nothing. What's going on!!!! =( =( It keeps coming back worse and worse.

My eye is swollen and painful, and has now started burning. What could be wrong?
Starting a couple days ago, my eye has started hurting. I don't remember getting anything in it, and I haven't rubbed it any. The back of the bottom eyelid (the part that touches my eye) is really red and swollen, and now it burns when I blink for too long.

I have a doctor's appointment coming up, so I'll ask him then if it's not better, but I'd like some advice in the meantime.

    • ANSWER:
It sounds like you could have pinkeye of some sort, or you have a stye. A stye is an infection of a sebaceous gland on one of ur eyelids, and this can account for it being red and swollen. Your doctor can take care of both for you.

    Swollen eyelid?
this morning i woke up with a swollen and painful area in my eyelid toward the tea duct. Dunno whats its from but on the inside its really red and irritated and its extremely painful if touched and it kinda hurts when i blink. any ideas about what this is about and what i can do about it? thanks!

    • ANSWER:
      It sounds like a stye.

A stye is typically harmless, resulting from a bacterial infection and forming at the base of an eyelash, or on or inside the eyelid.

A stye, medically known as a hordeolum, is a small lump that appears on, inside or under the eyelid or on eyelashes. Styes typically result from a staphylococcal bacteria infection or from a clogging of the oil glands around the eyelashes or inside the eyelid, but can be triggered during times of stress. They are usually harmless, despite their appearance – causing redness, tenderness, pain and sometimes light-sensitivity and eye-watering.

Styes are often confused with chalazion, which are cysts that forms on or inside the eyelids as a result of a blockage of one or more of meibomian glands. However, a chalazion is not an infection and is usually painless, but may attract bacteria and lead to an infection. Styes that appear on the eyelid are usually deeper, more painful and last longer than those appearing on the eyelash.

Redness, tenderness and pain are usually the first symptoms of a stye (though eyelash styes are less painful and heal with less effort than eyelid styes). These are followed by:

Swelling in a small area or the entire eyelid
The affected eye may water, feel irritated or be sensitive to light
      Discomfort when blinking
A small yellowish spot (pointing) in the center of a sty, which occurs when pus collects and expands. Pain is usually is relieved when the sty ruptures, draining the pus.

Wash your hands regularly and avoid touching your eyes to the spread of bacteria. Avoid sharing eye makeup, especially if you’re prone to recurring styes.

While an eyelash stye will usually drain on its own in approximately 2 days, a warm compress can speeding healing. Apply a washcloth on the affected eye for 10 minutes, four times per day, to release the fluids that have built up inside the stye. Do not squeeze the stye. Antibiotic ointment, or an antibiotic-steroid combination, can be used until symptoms have cleared.

If the eyelash stye lasts more than 3 days or the infection appears to be spreading, consult your eye doctor. You may have a chalazion or another condition that may require further examination.

Eyelid styes are more stubborn and usually require treatment by a physician. They may need to be lanced under sterile conditions. Oral antibiotics may be prescribed if the stye is very large, abscessed or not responding to other treatment.

Contact lenses should not be worn during infection or drainage of a stye. Your eyecare provider may recommend replacing your contact lenses after the stye has healed to prevent recurrence or spread of the infection.

    Swollen eyelid and headaches?
For about a year now my left upper eyelid has started swelling. It is only the left, and will come on periodically. Sometimes it looks like it's drooping although I think the drooping is actually caused by the swelling. It is not painful or red, although I can feel it swelling up when it starts. I tend to have it most mornings, although it usually goes away. It may then come on during the day - it can last from seconds to hours - currently it's constantly swollen, but not that much to notice - it will just get larger and smaller throughout the day. I can guarantee that when I'm tired or starting to get tired (whether this is at night time, or after doing exercise etc..) it will swell up alot.
I went to see the doctor - she's ruled out any form of allergy and has said there's an underlying cause. She asked me questions like, if I go numb on one half of my body, if I sweat on only one side of my face, if my pupil turns into a pin point etc... (no to all of these). She's sent pictures of my eye when it's swollen to a consultant but so far we haven't heard back from him. I don't think I have any other symptoms, the only thing is that I have started getting more headaches (have a cloudy head throughout the day, and then will get twangs of pain usually on my right side at the front, the headaches tend to get worse if I'm lying or sitting down and then move, either by standing up or just moving about) - although these headaches have only started in the past 2 months.
Does anyone have any ideas of what this could be? Any ideas would be appreciated as I can forward them to my doctor for us to look into.

you probablyhave a minor eye infection, happens when you touch your eye/rub it with dirty hands.

if its really painful you should go to the doctor and they will probably give you a course of antibiotics or an eye gel. otherwise you can get an over the ocunter eye drop, and just keep the eye clean/dont rub it or irritate it much. should go away within 3 days.

my eyes are so painful and red all of the time, nothing seems to help me, please give good advice.?
my eyes are always sore and red,i do suffer with dry eye so use optrex eye drops, eye wash, lid cleaners, warm water, irratated dry eye dops along with many many more tryed and tested medicines including tablets.Alot of the time my eyes tend to have eyelashes or other small hairs fall within them and i can never get them out so they can stay there for a week or so,often feels like there at the back of my eye and get comfortable so cant feel the pain as much or them moving around, then the hair/eyelash will move within my eye and i have no choice but to turn my lid up and scrape it out with my finger as cant see it but can 100% feel it,(i understand i shouldnt do this) but i have too ! i will eventually get it out and pain dyes down along with redness and swelling. An eye bath or cold water dont seem to help or assist me,ive been to the eye clinic many times with my eyelid swollen and very red, they look into it (drops etc) but state there is nothing there which does get me down as ill often get it out myself sometime later, why cant they see it ? ive been to eye clinic also just to see the eye doctor who states i have dry eye as the 'paper test they do ' proves it, then just fobs me off and says come back in 3 - 5 months, im getting no where, its taking over my life, people must think im on drugs etc,ive tryed so so many things and costs a fortune.I dont have normal eyes clearly, but they seem to be getting much much worse within last 11 months,i work in a clean office enviroment, clean house,no dogs or rodents.i bathe them alot. its hard not to rub, when i wake up in the morning there not sticky but very painful to open as it feels like my lids stuck to eyeball and are still red,i do get 8 hours sleep a night on average, its making me so so tired now and is giving me regular headaches just above my eyes within that area.somebody please assist me. many thanks

    • ANSWER:
Have you been to a Rheumatologist?. Dry eyes can accompany many of the auto-immune diseases. Sometimes cortisone drops help, there is also a small surgical process that can promote tears and help alleviate dryness. Since the optometrist isn't helping, I would say see the Rheumatologist or at least your regular doctor. You must feel miserable and deserve to find out all possibilities.

My 1.5 year old Shih tzu has puffy swollen eyelids, very painful for her and us to watch.?
Hi everyone. First off allow me to describe my family. I recently proposed to my fiancee 1.5 yrs age, and shortly after we adopted a baby shih tzu. Now she has grown to 1.5 yrs of age, and is considered to be more than a pet, but our baby girl, so the situation is very severe. One week ago a red dot dot appeared on one of her eyelids. We decided to take her to the vet the next day, because that night she began to cry, scream, and pick at her eye. So the next day we took her to the vet. By the time we got there, the originally infected eye's eyelids had completely puffed up and was swollen, and the same thing began to happen to her other eye's eylids. On top of this her eyeball began to turn red. She was given a full examination, and an ulcer was ruled out. The vet diagnosed her with conjuctivitis, but wasn't 100% with her diagnoses. So she put her on steroids to fight the inflammation, eye drops to moisten her eyeballs, and antibiotics to fight the presumed infection. Today, six days later we took her back to the vet, the original infected eyelid had gotten worse over the course of the five days inbetween visits, but it began to look like it recently began improving (like for the last day). While her originally infected eyelid had appeared to be improving (to me), her other eyelids had worstened (redness in eyes have disappeared). The Vet said that it could still be conjuctivitis but a very severe case, or a staff infection, and wanted us to drop her off for a few hours to allow them to clean out her eyes, and treat her. When we returned her eyes were RAW, and scraped and completely swollen, twice that what it was before. It was devastating to see she was also in severe pain (crying and whimpering nonstop). Then the vet gave us another POSSIBLE diagnoses, which is an autoimmune deficiency. And we were given a stronger steroid dose, and pain medication to administer along with the other original medications. I guess what my question is, is what type of auroimmune deficincey this could be, and also whether or not you believe it to be autoimmune deficiency, or one of the other diagnoseses we were given, or any other possible diagnoseses you can think of. Thank you everyone for your useful and respected involvement in the steps that I am taking forward to heal my baby.

    • ANSWER:
I agree with everyone else on getting a second opinion. My jack russel had what I believed to be an eye infection at first because it just happened overnight. I took her to the vet they dropped a couple of drops in her eye saw no holes and sent me home with an eye drop medicine. Couple of days later it got worse, took her back and they gave me a stronger does of the eye drops. I believed that the second dose worked. Little did I know that it only got worse from there. I came home from work and she could barely open her eye. I rushed her to banfield at petsmart because I knew they would be still open late and got a second opinion. They said it looked like her eye had separated on the inside and that my personal vet should have seen it. I was referred to an emergency pet clinic that operated on her the next day. Needless to say that doctor told me I should have brought her in after the second time I had to go back for the issue. I was upset with my previous vet for not making the call but I was glad that I followed my instincts and took her to another vet vice waiting. In the end I was in the hole about 00. But now whenever I have a problem with her I make sure that I go for a second opinion from another source just to make sure. Paying .00 vice another 00 is always better. I would ask the doctor to point you in the direction of an animal ophthalmologist. Someone that specifically deals with the eyes. That's if you haven't done so already. If you are in the Virginia Beach, VA area I have a doctor that can refer you too. I hope my words help you.

    Swollen Eyelid?
A few days ago I put eczema cream around my eyes to treat my dry skin there. However I had an allergic reaction. My eyes are much better now, except for my right eyelid, which still remains swollen as is the skin above it which has sort of collapsed onto my eyelid. It's not at all red or painful, it's just like I have bags over my eye instead of under it. What can I do to make it go away?

Also, is there anything you can do about eczema around the eyes? I've had a problem with it for months, but obviously I can't put eczema cream there again. I'm at a loss of how to permanently get rid of it.

    Thanks in advance.

Go to the chemist and get their advice . As you have found out the hard way you need a gentle cream for eczema around the eye .

My dog had swollen eyelids on right eye after 2 days back to normal, now it is her left eye?
Her left eye is a bit red. Her eyeball seems normal. No discharge, nothing seems to be in either eye. Her right eye is back to normal but now her left eyelids are swollen. Not painful, she is not acting any different. She is not scratching either eye. She is a very healthy 2 yr old aussie, lab, border collie mix. Absolute sweetheart! Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    • ANSWER:
Dogs can get pink eye, just a people can. Soak a washcloth in lukewarm water. Wring the washcloth out and gently wipe any discharge away from your dog's eye.

Look for and remove any foreign objects in your dog's eye.

Flush your dog's eye with lukewarm water or artificial tears for humans that have no preservatives. This is especially important if you were unable to see any foreign objects in your dog's eye.

Put a compress on your dog's eye. This can be a clean washcloth that has been soaked in lukewarm water and wrung out, then folded into a square. Hold the compress gently to your dog's eye--don't apply pressure. Be sure to use a different compress for each eye so you don't spread the infection.

Repeat as necessary until your dog's pink eye goes away.

    swollen eyelid! Help!?
I woke up this morning and my left eyelid was swollen up and slightly purple. Its not itchy or painful. My eye isn't red or itchy either. I put cucumber on it for about an hour and the swelling went down but if i take it off, the swelling comes back after 5 minutes. Do I have something contagious? Is this serious? How do I get the swelling down? All answers are appreciated!
BTW: its not a stye or pinkeye

my right eye has felt swollen for about a week now. It's not red or itchy or painful?
my right eye has felt swollen for about a week now. It's not red or itchy or painful. It remains constant with or without contacts. At first i thought it was just heavy eyelids from being tired or something, but ive been getting adequate sleep, and now i actually feel like its my eye swollen and not the lid.
The reason I have not yet seen an optomatrist is because Im in college and there's not a doctor I can get to unless somebody drives me, and my schedule and others schedules / the doctors office hours are very incompatible. Our school infirmary rarely knows what they're talking about and provides little help

    Eye swollen and very painful...?
Hi, yesterday I noticed my eye was bothering me...right before I went to sleep it started hurting really bad... I woke up yesterday afternoon and my eye was almost swollen shut and the eyelid is red.... the eye itself isn't red at all, but it feels so dry, like I don't have tears or something to moisturize it. It hurts when I blink or when I just shut my eye. I've tried ibprofen for the swelling which didn't seem to help, and I've tried warm wash cloths but they get cold too fast.... I've attached a picture to see if maybe someone could tell me what it might be??? I don't know if it's a sty because there isn't a small pimple like pustul? I'm going to my doctor tomorrow, but I was wondering if someone could help me out for now...

Is there any type of ointment I can get to reduce the swelling from a pharmacy?

    • ANSWER:
don't do what bob said hes not smart. Don't spend a dime at the pharmacy. Warm cloth eye drops. The heat helps a lot. Cold would not be what you want could make it worse. 48 hours. Don't rub it or play with it. just let it go away. Tell your mom I said hi.

My right eyelid and only my right eyelid is swollen .
It started a few days ago, but I thought it would go away with time. However, now, it is painful when I blink or exert any pressure on the affected area (which is my right eyelid, around the end corners). It's not pink eye because my eye isn't even red, let alone pink . It is now swelling and makes me look like I have a monolid, which I don't.

It could be stye, but I'm not sure. My parents refuse to go to the doctor because they think it's natural and will go away in a few days. How long does a swollen eyelid usually last ?

    • ANSWER:
It's probably a sty, I had the same thing too. You could either go to the doctor and get some drops, but since you can't go yet. Try using a warm compress and placing it on your eye frequently over the next couple of days. If you don't have anything to use, dip a CLEAN washcloth in hot water and hold it over the bump and when it cools, do it again :)

Also, if you use contact lenses, discard them immediately.

If I apply some pressure on it. ie like putting moisturizer on, my eyes will water for a while. It all started when I was crying for non stop for a few hours 3 months ago. Now because of the cold weather or the fact I sleep next to a radiator, my eyes have gotten worse. I have been referred to the hospital, my appointment is in over a month. PLEASE HELP. Do I have a Stye or Chalazion?
I'm sorry this is going to be long :( PLEASE read though

So on Sunday night (the 26th), i noticed my eyelash on my left eye was starting to hurt. When i took a closer look, i noticed this white looking stuff on the root of my eyelash that seemed to kinda fade away into my eyelid. My first thought was that i had some eye crust or something dried onto my eyelash, but when it wouldn't come off i figured it was a stye. (i had one before 6 years ago, i was 12 but i don't exactly remember what it was like). So i put a warm tea bag on it and it actually seemed to worsen it. And within a few hours, it got red and a little more painful on my eyelid instead of my eyelash.

I woke up the next day and my eye was crusted, i kinda had to peel my eye open. And it had gotten more swollen overnight. And it was painful especially when i blinked. BUT the swelling had reduced within an hour or two of waking up. I put warm compressions on it for 15 minutes throughout the day.

I woke up this morning and it was again more swollen but the swelling reduced. I had no eye crust or anything. It's just a red swollen somewhat painful bump in the middle of my top eyelid. I don't see a white spot where the puss is suppose to come to a head.

I'm extremely worried and paranoid that it's actually going to form into a chalazion.... which i hear can last for months :( and i absolutely do not want it for that long.

so pretty much my symptoms are just redness, painful (but it seems to be getting less painful), swelling, and my eyelid feels a little heavy.

Does this sound more like a stye or a chalazion?

    • ANSWER:
Given its initial presentation and its location near the margin of the eyelid, I'd say its a A hordeolum (stye). Warm compress is the treatment of choice for both hordeolum and chalazion. If it persists for more than 7 days then it may be a chalazion and may need to be treated by a doctor.

Do I have a sty or possibly something else?
One morning I woke up and my bottom right eyelid was swollen and very painful to the touch. Its been over a week and it is progressively getting more swollen, and its red all around it. Also on the inside of the eyelid you can see a round red bump about a 1cm in width. Is it a stye or possibly something else? The swollen eyelid is hard and painful to the touch.

What to do w/ a swollen upper eyelid?
My left upper eyelid has been swollen for the past couple of days and I'm not sure of what the cause is. I took off my contacts coming home from school one day and everything was fine. After a couple hours my eye became itchy so I rubbed it and I felt a bit of discomfort, which wasn't really painful but it wasn't a pleasant feeling either.
I didn't think it was anything and went to bed. The next morning the upper lid of my eye was swollen and there was alot of discomfort + swelling by the tip of my eye closest to the bridge of my nose.
It has been like this for 2-3 days now and it is more itchy than painful and is only uncomfortable whenever I poke at it or blink too hard.
It may have been wearing my contacts too often and recklessly that's caused this or just poor hygiene unfortunately but I don't think it is a sty either b/c the swelling isn't red or anything at all in one inflamed area. One eye just looks like the eyelid is bigger than the other. At the moment, the swelling has gone down but I'm afraid that it will become swollen again sometime in the night while I'm asleep.
I haven't been able to visit the doctor just yet and I'd like to know how to treat it until then as it is really annoying for me.
Any contributions would be appreciated, thank you =]

    • ANSWER:
Sounds like a stye in ur eye to me Wich is basically an ingrown eye lash if I'm not mistaken. They wont always be red. A good thing for that is a hot tea bag. I usually heat a cup of hot water and dunk the tea bag in it and let it sit in my eye until its not hot anymore just don't make it too hot to where it scolds you. Make it hot enough to stand but not burn. This helps with the swelling and discomfort. Hope this helps. Even if its not a stye it will still help with swelling ad discomfort.

Eyelid is swollen, may have something to do with eczema. Help!?!?
I have suffered from eczema for many years so it wasn't much of a surprise when my skin started getting itchy and red earlier this week. It started getting better as I treated it, but this morning I woke up and suddenly my skin was inflamed and itchy and my left eye was swollen almost shut! It's not painful or anything but extremely irritating. Could this be an allergic reaction, or is it just eczema? How do I get rid of the swelling?

    • ANSWER:

What is the treatment / cure for a STYE in the eye?
The eyelid beneath the eyelashes in one eye has become swollen, red, is painful, itches, shows crusting, indicating an infection. The condition has steadily gotten worse over the last 24 hours since the onset of the swelling approximately 48 hours ago. Style ointment has been administered however the ointment treats the symptom but does not cure the infection.

What additional topical or oral medication or eye drops are needed to cure the infection? What treatment should be administered to clean the infected area? How to reduce the swelling, itching and pain?

    • ANSWER:
If you wear contacts, stop wearing them for a while. Put a hot cloth on the stye and let it sit there. Don't go on the computer or read small print for a while. In another words, don't strain your eyes. Let them rest.

could i be allergic to false eyelash glue?
every time i wear false eyelashes, my eyelids are red and swollen and kind of painful the next day after i've taken them off. is this a normal reaction to the irritation of pulling the eyelashes from my eyelid, or could i be allergic? i've also noticed that i usually get a headache while i'm wearing false lashes. i'm just wondering if this has happened to anyone else, and if i am allergic to false eyelashes or eyelash glue.

    • ANSWER:
You could be allergic to the latex, which is what some people have an allergy to in eyelash glue. I suggest you see an eye doctor though to be completely sure and be prescribed an antibiotic if you need it. If it does turn out to be an allergy to latex, I suggest you use Revlon Lash glue or their self-adhesive lashes, which are formulated without latex.

    Swollen eyelid cause???? Helllllpppp!?
It looks like I just went 4 rounds with Rocky and he went to town on my eye. My actual eye lid is fine, but the brow skin under my eyebrow is all swollen. I plucked a hair 3 days ago and after that it was red, the next day, it felt like it was swelling or like a zit was about to pop up. Yesterday, it was just painful and it looks like im wearing purple eye shadow. Who knew plucking one hair would make my whole eye freak out. Any ways to make the swelling go away? (Ice doesnt work that well, already tried it) We're thinking it might be a spider bite too, but who knows?

    • ANSWER:
Continue with the ice which is the first line of attack for most bruising and swelling. Apply the ice pack for about 20 minutes on and 20 minutes off several times a day for the first day. If you see no difference in a day or two, or if it is getting worse, see your doctor. If it is a spider bite, the treatment is the same.

    Overnight Eyelid Swelling?!?
I woke up this morning after 6 hours of sleep and my right upper eyelid was very swollen. It came on very suddenly, but it not accompanied by any other symptoms. Its not itchy, red, painful, and theres no distinctive lump or bump, which is why i don't think it is a sty. Does anyone have any ideas?

    • ANSWER:

The entire eyelid on my left eye is very swollen, what could it be?
Yesterday my left eye was hurting and the eyelid was a little swollen. It was a little weepy, but mostly just painful. I woke up at five o'clock this morning to find that it is ten times more swollen (looking like Will Smith's eye in Hitch when he eats that fish). The eyelid is very tender and a little red and weepy. My eye isn't pink or red at all, but I'm worried I might have pinkeye since I work with small children. My eye is nearly swollen shut with the swelling on the upper lid. There is no green or yellow crusties or discharge, it just seems to be teary. Obviously I'm going to need to go to the doctor if it gets any worse, but do you think I should go now? Thanks for you help :)
thankyou so much for the help!

im in the us, so i dont think ur in yahoo uk, but i really appreciate you answering :)

    • ANSWER:
It could be eyelid edema and yes, you should contact your doctor. A severely swollen lid can press on the eye and possibly increase the intraocular pressure. An infection needs to be ruled out. Or, something as simple as an allergy to nail polish and then touching the eyes can cause swelling. The best treatment for allergic eyelid edema is to find and remove the substance causing the allergy. When that is not possible, as in the case of plant allergens, cold compresses and immunosuppresesive drugs such as corticosteroid creams are helpful. However, steroids can cause cataracts and increase intraocular pressure and patients must be very careful not to get the cream in their eyes. This should not be done unless under a doctor's care. For edema caused by trichinosis, a parasitic disease caused by eating meat that is not thoroughly cooked, the trichinosis must be treated.

      Good Luck to you

Red bump on inside bottom eyelid..?
i have a red bumb on my inside bottom eyelid; not pimple llike but ust swollen bumpish looking. It doesn't itch; however it is irritating and a little painful; it's extremely painful when touched. what is this? thanks!

    • ANSWER:
It's a stye. It's like a pimple but on the inside of you're eyelid. Okay don't rub your eye at all an if you do wash your hands. You don't want it to spread to the other eye. If you're a girl stop wearing any eye makeup until it goes away and throw away your old eye makeup. To make it go away you will need more rest so you're body can heal. Take hot showers the steam will help open the pores and compress a hot rag against your eye every twenty minutes. Also putting the infected eye above a hot mug of water will help. Do not try to pop it!

I have burning, itching, and red dry skin around my eyes. It's worst on my eyelids and it's very painful.
I've had this condition once before about a week and a half ago. It gets worse for about 2 days and gets redder, more painful with burning, and my eyes swell. Then it gets so dry my skin peels and then it begins to heal and takes about 3 days to heal. I discontinued using anything that was new after the first painful bout, but now it's back again. What can it be?

    • ANSWER:
Because it's around your eyes, and it has re-occurred,you really need to get to your MD's office and have this checked out.It could be several things ,and you shouldn't put just any medicines around the eyes, there too important to risk your sight. Take care. SW RNP
