Swollen Big Toes Causes

Here, you'll discover how to get rid of gout pain in your big toe using 3 simple natural remedies for gout. Plus, what you need to do to prevent recurring gout in the big toe with it's possible serious complications.

Symptoms of Gout Toe

The general symptoms of gout are redness, swelling, stiffness, inflammation, heat, and, excruciating pain. It happens mostly in older men, but it occurs also in younger men and women. And the most common area attacked is your big toe, but it can occur in most any joint, e.g. ankle, knee, elbow, wrist, and so on.

Cause of Gout in the Toe and Other Joints

A gout attack is caused by the appearance of uric acid crystals in your joints, and of course, this happens more often in your big toe. But where do these crystals come from? They are formed as a direct result of you having higher-than-normal levels of uric acid in your blood.

Normally, the uric acid that your body naturally produces, is processed by your kidneys, which then excrete excess uric acid from your body via the urine with a small amount through stools. This leaves low levels which your body needs.

But, when your kidneys aren't working effectively enough, or, your body is producing way too much uric acid for your kidneys to process, excess / too much uric acid is retained in the bloodstream. This then leads to crystals in your big toe, for example, and gout.

Drug-based Medications for Gout

Your doctor will almost certainly prescribe drugs to relieve pain, reduce inflammation and lower uric acid. These work pretty well, but, they can have several bad side effects; stomach pain, bleeding, stomach ulcers, headaches, nausea, vomiting and allergies.

But, they cannot address the root cause of gout, so they are only effective so long as they are being taken. The pain killers and anti-inflammatory drugs are taken until the pain and symptoms go away. But, the uric acid reducing drug(s) are long term, in order to maintain healthy uric acid levels and prevent recurring gout.

Recurring Gout Complications

And, it's really important to control your uric acid levels going forward, to help prevent gout. Frequently occurring gout attacks over an extended period can cause you to have severe complications, such as high blood pressure, kidney stones, kidney damage, and, permanently damaged joints, e.g. your big toe.

Gout Home Remedies

So, because of taking drugs over the longer term with their possible nasty side effects, many gout sufferers are utilizing the natural benefits of home remedies for gout. Here are 3 typical remedies to get rid of gout pain in your big toe...

(1) - Consume 20 - 40 cherries every day. They have natural antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. You can also drink the cherry juice you get in health food stores.

(2) - Drink 12 x 8oz glasses of water everyday to aid you kidneys do their job of processing and flushing excess uric acid out of your system.

(3) - Dip your big toe in alternating hot and cold water foot baths. 3 minutes hot water then 30 seconds in cold water, then keep repeating. Replenish hot and cold water as necessary. This helps the circulation and reduces inflammation.

How to Prevent Recurring Gout

Of course, this only helps with your current got attack in your big toe. There are many other home remedies you need to look at, plus, critical things like your diet, weight position, and lifestyle, in order to prevent recurring gout and possible permanent damage down the road.

You're in luck though. There's a special gout report available online (see below) that has all the information you need in one place. 2. QUESTION:
What are the causes of a red/swollen portion of a toe, near the nail?
My big toe on the right foot has a swollen portion, near where the nail and skin meets. It flares up every now and then and does not seem to correlate with getting a pedicure or my nails cut. What could be causing this, my toe rubbing up against my shoe or infection? What should I do to fix it?
    Thanks

    • ANSWER:
Could be the type of shoes you wear. The top of the red area could be rubbing up against thread fibers that can harden overtime. If it turns into a bubble, then watch out-could be athlete's foot.

  3. QUESTION:
    Cause of big toe swelling?
The big toe on my right foot became a bit swollen.
It started around 2 or 3 weeks ago. At first I started feeling minor pain at the bottom left corner of the toe nail(as in the root of the nail, its not an ingrown nail).
Then the pain sort of went down, and it barely bothers me now at all. But the toe started to swell slowly. It's a bit reddish and swollen now.
I've checked some web-sites, but couldn't really find anything that described my symptom.

    1. It's reddish
    2. It's swallen
    3. It doesn't hurt

    What is it?

    • ANSWER:
Gout causes the symptoms you are describing.

  6. QUESTION:
Dropped a 3/4 full bottle of wine on foot, now the big toe is purple and swollen. what should i do?
I don't think the toe is broken, cause i can move it (with difficulty because of the swelling). What should i do now to take care of it? thanks
by the way ....I really don't have money to see a doctor, so i would greatly appreciate any at home care advice

    • ANSWER:
A toe can still be broken even if you can move it. Try cold and warm therapy for a few days and salt baths. Take Tylenol if you have pain. If you don't see an improvement in a few days (4-5) then you should go to the doctor. If is broken it will be hard for the toe to heal and then you might even need surgery if left unattended. Best Wishes!

Just recently my pinkie toe started itching really really bad when I went to bed. The next morning I noticed that my toe was all red, swollen, and had that general swollen pain. This continued and now my biggest toe is starting to do the same thing. What could be causing this?

    • ANSWER:
If you recently went in the cold weather without proper shoes, it could be chiblains. But you really should let a doctor look at it in case you have an infection like cellulitis.

  11. QUESTION:
What's the cause of my swollen toes?
Basically, for the past few months, my toes on only my left foot of been becoming red, and swollen. They tend to hurt when I bend them too. But it's not always the same toes. I go bare foot quite a lot, to toughen up my feet, and usually when this happens I'll just soak them in apple cider vinegar and it will all be okay, but this is different.

Keep in mind they're not extremely swollen, and I don't even now if that's the right word to use. But they are red and slightly bigger than on my right toes.

My shoes aren't too tight, and I do not have any ingrown toenails, or have I had any cuts on those toes recently. The only thing that happens is I frequently bash my toes, especially on my left foot, into objects accidentally. Could that be the cause of my problems?

Or, could it be that I'm possibly in the early staged of getting warts?
Thank you, but I doubt I have gout. It's not that severe, and no one in my family has ever had gout.

    • ANSWER:
Maybe you have gout...I hope not for your sake. Gout attacks the joints of the hands and/or feet. The joints swell and become quite painful. It usually runs in the family and is common in overweight people.

  12. QUESTION:
What do I do about a swollen toe with blood and puss coming out?
I injured my toe a couple weeks ago and it started swelling around my nail. I was in gym class and it popped and now i have dry blood around my toe nail and puss coming out. It hurts alot when I walk on it and if I touch it. I cut my toe nail cause i thought it would help but now the swelling has gotten even bigger and is going to the bottom of my toe.

    • ANSWER:
If you are young, perhaps the possibility of the following may be low:

Are you diabetic? Young people can be diabetic too. So, the question may apply to you. Check it out. The blood circulation to toes is poor for diabetic patients.

If not diabetic, then you have infected and compounded the problem with self treatment. Blood clot should have been drilled out by a doc to ease the pressure. Don't think of a Black and Decker type of a drill - LOL - it is really quite sophisticated. It is too late now.

Antibiotic, or an ointment that reduces the inflammation is to be contemplated. Doc may adise you to dress it with iso-propyl alcohol and bandage it to keep the bacteria from forming further problem.

Obviously the puss is due to dead white corpuscles that has fought the invation of bacteria and died. There is a war going on down there.

  13. QUESTION:
I fell and really hurt my big toe, I can bend it but it's swollen and extremely painful, any ideas?
I can bend it but do not because of the crazy amount of pain it causes, so I know that it's not broken, I'm limping around because any pressure on it nearly makes me cry. It constantly hurts and throbs, it's been a day.

Does anyone know what I did to it?

Or what I can do about it? I doubt a doctor will be able to do anything,

  14. QUESTION:
Worried about swollen/ infected big toe?
    Hi all,

For about 2 months now I have struggled with an infected right big toe.
At first I thought some infection but given it started when I had an exam period, a very brief visit to a MD had to suffice. He said it was an ingrown nail and cut some parts off it. Up until then the toe had a pink/reddish colour around the left hand side and underside but didn't hurt.

After the MD (an older MD who sort of practices outside his hours, but we had to figure something with the exams!) cut the nail things started hurting a lot more. The colour stayed and we went for a second opinion to a second MD who suggested I take antibiotics. Well, about a week has passed now since I took the antibiotics but nothing has really changed unfortunately as far as the colour is concerned.

Both doctors suggested if things didn't go better I would have to be operated on. Because I have heard stories that this is a painful operation I wanted to try an alternative first and visited a podologist last Saturday. She extracted a little part of the toenail that the first MD had forgotten to cut out and had grown in. It hurted a lot at the time but it felt a lot better painwise and it still does (although I still have a limited degree of pain when pushing the top left hand corner of my right toe). The podologist suggested the infection should gradually go away within about 3 days. 3 days later and the toe is still as red, maybe slightly better.

I heard if you wait too long this infection can spread to the bone and can cause amputation !!!! This made me really concerned and I was wondering if this is a likely thing to happen and secondly what my next step should be.

    Thank you!

    • ANSWER:
The best thing you could do is have the operation. That is really a severe case of an ingrown toenail. My brother had one of those last year and it was nasty. He tried every from soaking his nails in how water every night to trying to cut the ingrown nail. However he would always fail because the toe is very sensitive and the wound is spreading all through out his toes. The only way to cure his toes is to have a surgery. It involves on cutting the flesh where the nail is growing so that they could cut the ingrown nail. It would be painful however it is better than suffering from the pain of an ingrown toenail forever. Where you could lose your toes if you act too late.

  20. QUESTION:
I have been having pretty intense pain in my two big toes, and the nail has started turning blue?
I dont know what the problem is. I have started to experience very achy big toes and the nail has started to turn blue staring at the base of the nail. I cant tell if it is the nail itself or if it is the surface below the nail. The toes hurt most when i wake up in the morning, or after a long day at work.
I spend all day on my feet at work, but this hasnt been a problem in the past. The aching pain started about 10 days ago.

I don't wear ill-fitting shoes and I have not dropped or slammed my toes into anything.
I'm pretty sure it isn't gout since i eat a very healthy diet and rarely intake the things that usually cause it. I'm also not overweight. The toes dont appear to be swollen or red.
I have NO idea what the problem could be.

I have iced the toes, but that seems to make them even more achy.
I've rested my feet for two days, and that didnt seem to help any. They end up hurting more sometimes after long periods of rest.
I've taken alieve (naproxen) and it helps a bit but my toes still feel achy. and the nails remains blue.

    Big toes hurt?
Both my big toes hurt occasionally. There are no ingrown toenails, they are not red or swollen, it's not arthritis pain (I know that kind) , I don't wear tight shoes and I don't play sports. I haven't kicked anything heavy and there no external signs of any kind but still sometimes both my big toes hurt like hell. Any idea what can cause this?

    • ANSWER:
Gout can cause pain in the toes. You need to see your medical doctor and have an examination to find out what exactly is the problem.

  22. QUESTION:
Could working out on the treadmill be causing my toes to swell and get blisters on them?
This is very weird but I have been working out for a little over three weeks, and I now have a blister forming on the bottom of my toe (the toe right next to the big toe). It is a little sore too. My other toes seems to be a little swollen underneath as well. I wear Nike Shocks to work-out in. I have alternated with socks (and they are kind of thicken anklet socks) and I tried tights yesterday (I wore them under my work-out pants).

Could it be that the insole in my shoes are worn out? I believe it's from friction, but what can I do to alleviate that? I usually stay on the treadmill for 60 minutes, but I alternate the speed between 3.5 and 4.1. I never run though. Could I be walking too hard?

    • ANSWER:
You're right its the friction between your feet and shoes. The type of socks can help with this.

try soft cotton socks, the kind that soft towels are made of not the rayon or polyester type (like tights)

check your shoes, It should be a comfortable not too tight and not too loose.

Also, check with the gym instructors there if you are landing your feet correctly when you run, it is possible that you put a lot of weight on your toes instead of the balls of your feet.

  23. QUESTION:
What are the symptoms and causes af gout?
I have some serious pain in my big toe but it doesn't seem that swollen, Also I do suffer from acute arthritis but the pain seems different than that. Any help or info would be appreciated
    Thanks.

    • ANSWER:
Does it feel so painful that you would think it was broken?
My arthritis turned out to be gout and was only diagnosed when I went to a GP on holiday! He took one look and said "That's gout go and see my nurse and get a blood test"
      It was positive.
      I was astounded!
He gave me a prescription for Allopurinol and I've taken it ever since.
I'm teetotal and steer clear of purines
It doesn't necessarily come from your diet-your body is producing the uric acid itself.

my boyfriend was giving me a ride home on his bicycle yesterday as he usually does and my foot got caught in the wheel as it was still going round. i was in serious pain and couldn't walk, i still can walk properly (this happened yesterday). my big toe and 2nd toe have swelled quite badly and are bruised (so it the top of my foot). it causes me pain when i try to bend my first two toes and are still badly swollen. i cant put my shoes on either without being in really bad pain. im sick of walking round with a limp and want to make it better, what do i do?

If you do go to the ER, they'll just take x-rays and then tell you to tape your toes together and follow R.I.C.E
RICE stands for Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation. Follow this for a few weeks. If there hasn't been any improvement from that, see your doctor.

  26. QUESTION:
Pain and slight swelling on the Big Toe- what could be the cause?
A few weeks ago I noticed some slight pain on the outside of the "outermost knuckle" of my left big toe. It almost felt like a bruise. Since then it has become more painful. The pain seems to be focused on the joint and there seems to be some swelling. I don't think it's gout because I have non of the risk factors (I'm vegetarian, relatively fit, etc). I haven't started wearing new shoes and I don't recall doing anything too traumatic to the toe. Any ideas? Note this is not the knuckle closer to the foot that gets a bunion. Also, the swelling is spread out in an area around the size of a dime. It doesn't have any glossiness or extreme hardness, but it hurts like hell now whenever I put pressure on it. Curling the toe up or down hurts a lot.
I went to go see the doc. He said he didn't think it was gout because my foot didn't really swell up. He thought tendonitis, but admitted it didn't really make sense based on what I had said. He did take a blood sample to measure uric acid levels, so I'll see if that pans out. My symptoms have largely abated over the past several days though. I I have been drinking a lot more water and I'm still suspecting gout and that the hydration merely flushed the crystals out (or resolublized them). I have also taken an anti-inflammatory a few times, but I think the water did more personally.

2 year olds big toe is bright red and very swollen, I don't know what is wrong with it?
My little girls toe has been red and swollen for about a week now. When I first noticed it I wasn't too worried and I thought I would leave it for a few day expecting it to heal up itself. Now I have made a docotrs appointment but can't get in until tomorrow. It seems to be getting worse, its alot brighter red than it was to start with and it looks shiny. I keep looking at it today and think it looks like it has a tinge of purple but when I look closer it just looks red still, but maybe it is slowly turning purple?
I don't think its an ingrown tonail because the nail doesn't appear to be curved in or anything.
I don't know what has caused it there are no signs of a cut or a bite, and as far as I know she hasn't dropped anything on it.
I give it a slight squeeze to see if its causing her pain and she says 'sore' but doesn't cry out or pull away or anything to indicate it is anymore than just slightly sore.
Sorry to go on just trying to give as much info as possible.
So has anyone got any idea what could be wrong with my daughters toe? Any suggestions for how I can look after it until we go to the doctor? I am thinking if it starts turning purple I should take her straight to ER..
At the moment I am soaking it in warm salty water a few times during the day, putting aniseptic cream on it and have it wrapped lightly in a bandage just to keep it padded and protected. Not sure if any of this will help but at least I am doing someting.
The whole toe is swallon, not just the tip.

How can I get the swelling down? What should I be concerned about? Can this cause an infection? If so what should I look for? Any help appreciated...

    2. I'm not a bitch.

    • ANSWER:
Hi, I'm an R.N. and I think I can help.

Firstly, as long as you're not running a fever, having trouble breathing, or have swelling up your leg...you can probably treat this at home.

      1. For itching/swelling: take Benadryl orally, 25 mg every 4-6 hours AROUND THE CLOCK until the swelling goes away and for 24 hours after the swelling goes away (to prevent it from coming back) should do the trick. But if you've never taken Benadryl before, you need to check with a doctor first. Benadryl can make you drowzy, so be aware, and careful.

      2. Mix together baking soda and water to form a paste and smear in where you got stung. Leave it on for at least 30 minutes. This will help soothe the sting site. You can do this several times a day.

      3. Ice pack your foot for 20 minutes at a time with a couple of hours off, then repeat several times a day. You can use ice and do the baking soda paste at the same time.

      4. Elevate your foot as much as possible, this will help with the swelling too.

      5. See a doctor if any of the following occurs:
      a) red streaking that goes up your leg
      b) fever over 101
      c) you have trouble breathing or swallowing
      d) pus draining from sting site
      e) swelling that extends beyond your calf
      f) if your foot turns purplish
      g) if your symptoms don't improve in the next 3-5 days.

  29. QUESTION:
Do I need to have my big toe rebroken?
I was playing with my daughter at the playground, spinning her on a roundabout and I slipped and fell. My toe was causing my the most pain, as I couldnt bend it, nor get up without help. Within a few hours it was very swollen and slightly purple and yellow. I assumed it was broken. I called a doctor and they told me that I couldnt have anything done about it and going to a hospital was pointless. She told me when she broke her toe it took 6 weeks to heal. So, I left it and it healed. Now, I cant bend it like the other big toe. It stays straight even though the rest of my toes bend. Do I need to have it rebroken and set just to get it to bend again? It makes kneeling and getting up very hard and I have 2 young daughters. Thanks to anyone with any advice. Please dont bother with sarcasm or attitude. It wont be appreciated and it wont go down well. Thanks again.
Thank you for your response, I really appreciate it, but I dont think that is what I have. Its not the base of the toe that wont bend, its the top part, just below my toenail. That is the part that I broke and thats the part that wont bend anymore now that the break has healed. I didnt splint it and I couldnt stay off it, as I have 2 young daughters and a husband who works. If it is untreatable, then I will just have to deal with it, right? It slows me down, but doesnt stop me completely. But thank you so much for trying to help! :-)

Its really red around it, but mostly at the cuticle part, it looks like my skin is almost covered the bottom part of my nail. Now in the past couple of weeks, the same toe on my other foot has started doing the same thing. At first, I thought it was ingrown cause I cut my nails sometimes too short, but then when my one of my nails started turning yellow, it worries me.
I've heard from other people's answers on here that it could be gout, or a fungus since its on my other toe, so I've been soaking it in salt water, and putting anti-biotic on it at night with a bandaid, but what else can I do?
What could it be? I'm kinda confused, cause if its just an ingrown on both toes, I need to work on it or something but if its fungus then I can try to treat it..I don't have insurance so I don't want to go to the doctor or anything. I'm only 23 so it makes me wonder if it is fungus why am I getting it at a young age?

    • ANSWER:
Fungus has nothing to do with age.

Sorry, but if you really want to know what's wrong, you will have to see a foot doctor who will take a tiny snipping and have it tested for fungi.

If you really, really can't afford a doctor, just keep doing what you've been doing. You won't die from having gross toenails!

  32. QUESTION:
I have a constant clicking in my big toe. What could it be?
About 2 and a bit years ago, I was playing football and received a challenge from 'over the top' right onto the top of my foot. It hurt a bit at first on the top of my foot and my big toe, and there was some swelling, and it was very painful to walk on. I sought out medical advice, and they just said it was tissue injury. However, now, I have a clicking in my big toe (a region where a stud from the challenge hit) either between my metatarsal and first cunieform or phalange and metatarsal.
    What is causing the clicking?
It hurts sometimes, normally after physical exercise and when it is cold.
However, the pain does not seem to be in the same region in the clicking, but further up the foot when I move my toe, but also in the joint where the clicking is present I can pain sometimes

    • ANSWER:
It'll be air trapped in between the joints - happens to loads of people including myself. My thumbs constantly lock into the "Fonzy" position and I need to click them, normally in unison, to unlock! Don't worry about it unless its actually painful, then you should maybe head back to the Docs.

  34. QUESTION:
Why do my toes curl over and bulge?
I have been doing ballet since I was 3, and 4 years ago I started on point. My big toes bulge where they bend and curl over a bit. I subconsciously curl them over when I'm sitting. Anyway, whenever I go on point the bulge hurts. They swell up and I now have blood blisters on both of them. I find this weird cause they are on the side of my toe rather than the tip. Does anyone else get this?

    • ANSWER:
i think i understand what you are saying are you saying that you curl your toes in your point shoes bc if you do you need to stop that now! Just thinking about that makes me cringe. Take about a month of classes constantly thinking about not curling your toes and maybe google some therapy exercises on how to fix curled toes and that may fix the problem if this is totally irrelevant to what your saying then im sorry i dont understand what your explaining.

Sounds like my situation a few months ago. I was rearranging some furniture in the basement and I accidentally dropped a 200lb. treadmill on my big toe. Well, I think your best bet IS to talk to your family doctor and see if there's anything he or she can do.

  36. QUESTION:
What is wrong with my big toenail? stopped growing!?
The big toe on my right foot looks slightly larger than my other big toe, but this is only a recent thing since the nail went dodgy.

for the past 6 months or so the toe nail has not been growing, and there is a strange line going across the nail about halfway through, where the nail is noticeably thicker at the end and slightly yellow.

i dont think it is a fungal nail infection because it does not seem soft or crumbly. I also dont remember any injury or trauma to the toe to cause the nail to stop growing!!

The surrounding area hurts a little sometimes, and sometimes feels swollen and numb, but does not cause a lot of discomfort.

I really hope my nail can grow again!!
any ideas on what is happening or what is wrong?

any idea or help would be appreciated, thanks!
I also dont think it is a ingrown toenail, because i have previously had this on another toe and it felt different, also there are no signs of it being ingrown.

  39. QUESTION:
how to help big toe that i slipped and fell on, causing delayed pain, limping and swelling?
I stubbed my right big toe falling yesterday, and cut the side of it. I cleaned the cut and although irt hurt at the time, forgot about it until nighttime when the pain and throbbing prevented me from sleeping. Now, over 24 hours later the cut itself does not hurt but the toe, from the joint down, aches and throbs. I put crushed red pepper on it to help the inflammation because it is slightly larger than my left toe, but I am not sure what else to do. It hurts when I try to walk or put pressure on it.

Does it sound like a fracture, or because it took so long to start hurting something else? Thank you for any help.

    • ANSWER:
there isn't much a doctor can do whether it is broken or not. i'd just try to keep it elevated and iced. it will probably turn blue.

last time i broke my toe (4th one) it took about 2 weeks before it looked better (not purple).

good luck. i am not a fan of unnecessary dr visits, but if you worry about it all the time, sometimes it is just easier to go to the doctor and have a professional check it out... peace of mind...

  40. QUESTION:
    broken toes aren't healing?
i broke my big toe doing wood when i dropped a piece on it. then 3 weeks later a kid at soccer practice stepped on the same big toe and broke the growth plate. my parents brought me to the hospital that night and the doc put me on crutches and in a boot. my father got mad at me because he says my toe shouldn't't break that easy. he blamed it on me cause i don't drink milk..it gives me a stomach ache. so this week i ran into the wall while i was talking to my boyfriend on the phone and broke my middle toe. it is swollen and black. i am worried now because i am in 8th grade and it is my last soccer game next week. my big toe has something wrong with it now it has a big bump made of bone where i broke it. my other middle broken toe is getting the same bump. i am worried because i don't want to go into surgery because of the bumps. i don't know what to do with my toes. please give me ideas about the bump and stuff... thanks

    • ANSWER:
I just learned this morning at my 4 yo daughters' appointment with the orthopedist that it is totally normal to have a bump where the bone healed. Your body deposits an excess of calcium in that spot so it will heal. Slowly over the next year the body will smooth away the bump until it is back to normal. The body is amazing! As for your dad he doesn't sound very sympathetic!

  44. QUESTION:
    My Big Toe Really Hurts!!?
Three days ago, I kicked the fire place in the middle of the night. My big toe is now purple and slightly swollen. I can walk on it, but it hurts. Even small amounts of pressure, like my husband rubbing my feet, causes pain. I don't think it's broken because I've been down that road before, but what else could it be? I can't really afford to see a doctor right now because I have no insurance.

    • ANSWER:
What you have done is stoved your toe. It is like a sprain but not as bad. They call it stoved (old folks word) and there is not much you can do except wait for it to heal. You can take Tylenol for the pain and the epsom salts might work some but basically you just have to tough it out. I would baby it all I could and rubbing it gently may be of some benefit because it will help rub the soreness out. Sorry there is not much else to do that will help it. Don't wear sneakers cause it may just keep it sore. I would try a little ice, it is good for pain. I wouldn't make the epsom salts water HOT just warmer than warm so it doesn't swell. Good luck.

  45. QUESTION:
Toes swelling from broken leg cast?
Hi, I broke me leg couple of weeks ago and have a cast up to my knee for six weeks. At night my toes become like big fat sausages and are really itchy and then not so bad in the daytime. Putting foot up doesn't make any difference to the swelling. The cast itself is comfortable enough (as far as a cast can be called comfortable!), but the discomfort in my toes is awful. I do have a corn on my toe which is also extremely painful and swollen and not getting any better even though no weight is being put on that foot. Is my problem caused by the cast (thinking maybe water retention at night and ankle swelling?) or could the corn be infected? Just don't want to bother the fracture clinic as they're really busy or do I just need a visit to the chiropodist? bit of a crystal ball question this.....

    • ANSWER:
If your toes are swelling you need to go to A and E and they will sort your cast out, although the cast feels alright, it proble isnt a good fit.

  46. QUESTION:
I think i injured my pinkey toes ..... OWWW?
O.k so yesterday i was dancing to music i was spinning around my leg went down i was still spinning my spinning foot went SLAM right into the foot of the couch. It has been hurting and feels wierd for 2 days my mom says it will be fine but it is not the funny part is that it is swollen lol cause its big
    I AM only 9
    is it broken?????????????????

    • ANSWER:
There is nothing any doctor will do for a broken toe. You can spend a couple hundred dollars on doctor visit, xrays, etc and then they will tell you, yes it is broke. You will be out of all the money and still have a broken toe. When I was young this happen to me. I was so mad. I told the ER doctor, you mean I wasted all this time and money for you to tell me something that I already know? He said yes. I said and for all this money you will do nothing for me? He took tape out of his pocket and take the one toe to the other. He said how it that. And then he walked out and discharged me from emergency. So dont waste your time. It will heal in time. If the shoes hurt, then get a cheap pair of tennis shoes, the cloth five dollar type and cut the end of the shoe out where the toe is broken. Take tylenol for pain. That is all you can do.

  47. QUESTION:
    I have an ingrown toenail?
I have the sides of the nails cut off both big toes on each foot. Now the left one has come back except I try cutting it myself but cannot find the nail. Its burried under the flesh of my toe causing my toe to swell a bit. It hurts when I put pressure on it. I thought the surgery would take care of it but it hasn't. I went to my doctor but he said to wait for it to grow back how ever I can't find the dam nail !! PLEASE HELP !! I wanna start wearin my stilettos again !! =(

    • ANSWER:
Sorry to hear you toe problem. My husband has in grown nails on both big toes as well he had both removed and has learned to search and find the nail growing to the side. Unfortunately his keep going in grown again which sucks he is too stubborn to go back and have the nail removed again.
So if you can handle lots of pain the only suggestion other then waitting for the doc to re remove the nail all over again would go to the nail grooming dept in a store and buy the different types of nail clippers (like regular ones, and the scissor looking ones like they use in the nail places) also buy the cuticle cutter thingy and sit there and dig for it! It will be painful I am not going to lie, but it will give you the relief and by the next day swelling and soreness will be gone! Unfortunately these are TEMP solutions if it keeps going ingrown. The other suggestion is go to a toe specialist and they can kill the nail nerves and make it where the toenail never grows again.. but then that might be kinda not good looking.

Good luck and I hope your not in too much pain!

  48. QUESTION:
    is my big toe broke?
a fortnight ago i stepped on a peice of broken glass and very nastily cut my foot open. it was so bad that it resulted in me receiving 6 stitches. thing is though, the cut doesn't hurt so much now, but after a few days of doing it i realised i couldn't move or feel my big toe properly, the cut is just underneath the big toe, like on the joint. anyway at first i thought it was cause of the cut but now i'm not too sure and i am worried it may be broke, but how???
it was bruised at first but they have gone now, but my toe is very swollen and i am really struggling with walking on it. anyone help?
first of all, whats with my profile????

second of all, yes my toe does hurt when i move it, feels like glass is in it, but there isn't.

    • ANSWER:
could be you have some nerve damage from the cut and in that case you would not have much feeling right now. But in a few weeks yes, I would definately get it looked at if still not much feeling in it. Good Luck and God Bless.

  49. QUESTION:
My Toe Is Swollen and Very Red?
About a year ago, I had to have my big toenail on my right foot removed, because I noticed it was turning more and more red each day, then eventually purple. My doctor said there was a ton of blood under my nail, causing my toe to swell and hurt. Now for some reason, I'm having extreme pain on that toe. The skin around it very red and swollen. The nail is almost completely grown back and looks healthy. I haven't stubbed my toe recently, or done anything to make my toe like this. Any suggestions on what I can do, or why it's like this?
I don't think it's the way I walk, my nail is never worn down or anything. And I wear shoes that are looser fitting so I don't aggravate my toe.

    • ANSWER:
I'm not being silly. Is it the way you walk? Are you sticking your toe up in the air and is the nail rubbing against the top of your shoe? I wore down the nail of my big toe doing that. Wore it down below the skin and it was due to that particular pair of boots I had.

I really believe that if you think about what's happening to your toe and what you are doing on an every day basis, you probably know the cause.

First and foremost, do you think it's friction and/or restriction? Or, do you think it's biological? Your intuition may have the answer.

Just to be clear, when I say biological, I mean that there is a disease of some kind. Not an infection. If it's infected, that's just the result of either physical or biological agents acting on the toe.

One last thing about your shoes. Too much movement can also be bad. Just a thought.

So, what has your intuition told you about your toe?

P.S. my story about my toe was an example. I wasn't expecting you to have the same problem I had (god, would that be a coincidance)

  50. QUESTION:
    Swollen feet. Why?????
Today I noticed that my shoes where on too tight. After taking them off I noticed that both of my feet seemed a bit swollen. Also the left side of my big toe was very red and it hurt when I touched it. It had never happened before. Should I worry about this? What are the possible causes?

p.s. I wore dress shoes all day, but they are fairly comfortable and I was sitting down most of the time.

    • ANSWER:
